Sony's monster DVRs invade Japan

Sony has announced a new line of 250Gb and 500Gb DVR devices in their "CoCoon" line. I don't know if they plan to bring them stateside but they will be selling in November in Japan. I've heard the CoCoon line will offer all sorts of features including DVD read/writing and possibly gaming. With a quarter and half a terabyte of storage, they might even do HDTV recording.

The name of the device line kind of cracks me up, I assumed the japanese lifestyle trend among young people of "cocooning", or staying at home instead of going out, was a derogatory label, but maybe it's something consumers embrace or don't really notice.

Sadly it sounds like the CoCoon products won't make it over the pond to the US. That said, it is pretty crazy to see consumer electronics with more HDD space than your average PC. HiDef will only increase the demand for HDD space.

I would like to see a PVR that acts like a VCR, with NO subscription fees, etc. Just a convenience, not an additional bill to pay. I know some PC's are moving that way. I am not a cable or satellite subscriber, and do not anticipate such in the future. We do have quite a variety of over the air programming with the seven commercial networks with PBS and an independent station also available locally. Sure there are some desirable programs on the cable stations--sports/movies, but they aren't worth the subscription price.

I want a DVR but I am not going to pay a subscription fee to record TV shows. Make it optional for people that can't set a timer. Your CoCoon units sound great with a hard drive, DVD-R(W) and ethernet. It is just what I want but if you make the TiVo subscription mandatory I won't buy one. Why don't you let us download GemStar to the unit. It works fine on my computer and its free.

I feel your pain. There's no way in heck I'm going to pay a fee just to be able to record with a product I just bought. I just suggested this to Gateway (come up with a non-subscription or upfront fee DVR device).

More people need to start suggesting this to the larger corporations that can partner with electronics manufacturers.

Charging consumers monthly or upfront fees is nothing but downright SLEEZY.

The idea of PVR sounds great. Can they be used in countries such as South Africa in a similiar way that we use a VCR? We use PAL format for our television signal and electricity supply is 220V.

Is there such a DVR that doesn't require a subscription or a huge upfront fee. I don't have a demand for the "TV Guide", I just want to be able to program times and tell it to record at that time, like a VCR...hahaha.

you are missing a point here
you don't "record" in a traditional sense

with a pvr you stop "watching tv" altogether
everything you watch is "recorded"

it changes the meaning of "watching tv"
and makes broadcasting as obsolete as VHS

the fee to access guide data is well worth
being able to watch what you want, when you want

actually, you, Dan, are missing the point. there are plenty of people that want a digital recorder that works simply with a timer and saves them $15/month. not everybody needs to pause constantly, though, it would be nice during some old episodes of baywatch, it isn't worth the fee.
